A short trip is classified as any journey of up to four stops from the point of departure – but a maximum of two of those may involve the S-Bahn (urban rail) or U-Bahn (underground) or ExpressBus (for example X30).

You are permitted to combine modes of transport and change between them on a short trip. It makes no difference if you cross a zone boundary. You can even interrupt your journey, provided that you do not exceed the maximum travel time of one hour. The most important thing is that your journey must end by the fourth stop.

If the train/bus/etc. passes by a station on the route without actually stopping, this still counts as a stop.

In the districts outside Munich, every bus journey within the district boundary is classified as a short trip, regardless of the number of stops you pass through.

For a short trip, validate one stripe of the Stripe Ticket. Or buy a Short Trip Single Ticket. 

Example:
To go from Ostbahnhof (East Station) to Maxmonument, you travel two stops on the S-Bahn (urban rail) to Isartor and two stops on tram service 17 to Maxmonument. So it’s a journey of four stops, of which only two involve the S-Bahn – the short trip tariff applies.

Please note: it is not permitted to combine multiple short trips or to combine zone trips with short trips. However, you can extend your IsarCard’s area of validity with a short trip ticket.
